How do you test a shock absorber on a car?

Mar 05, 2026

A car shock absorber is actually a vibration damper. Shock absorbers are not only used in suspension in automobiles, but also in other positions. For example, it is used in the cab, seat, steering wheel, etc., and can also be used as a bumper on the vehicle bumper.

Detection method

1. Stop the car after driving 10km on the road with poor road conditions, and touch the shock absorber shell with your hand. If it is not hot enough, it means that there is no resistance inside the shock absorber, and the shock absorber does not work. At this point, appropriate lubricating oil can be added, and then the test can be carried out. If the outer casing is hot, there is a lack of oil inside the shock absorber, and enough oil should be added. Otherwise, the shock absorber is invalid.

2. Press the bumper firmly, then release. If the car has 2~3 jumps, the shock absorber is working well.

3. When the car is driving slowly and braking urgently, if the car vibrates violently, it means that there is a problem with the shock absorber.

4. Remove the shock absorber and stand it upright, clamp the lower end connecting ring on the vise, and pull and compress the shock absorber rod several times. At this time, there should be stable resistance, and the resistance of pulling up (recovery) should be greater than the resistance of pressing down. If the resistance is unstable or there is no resistance, it may be due to lack of oil inside the shock absorber or damage to the valve parts, which should be repaired or replaced.
